NATO planning for major Kandahar offensive

Officials in Kandahar province have begun humanitarian preparations in advance of fighting later this year, when NATO forces are expected to launch their most ambitious assault on Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan since 2001.
Kandahar's governor, Tooryalai Wesa, said officials are stockpiling tents, medical supplies and food as he expects as many as 10,000 people may have to flee their homes when the fighting starts.

Well I guess that is why all those extra US troops were sent there. Maybe NATO announces these missions hoping that most of the enemy would retreat from the battlefield before the first shot is fired. That's what I would do, slither from the area and fight some other day.
Good to see they are planning for the displaced families. The 3 stage warfighting concept.

Taliban suicide attack.

Well another attack in Kabul. The Taliban may be getting desperate,,, you may think? Maybe, because they are not all death seeking suicidal fanatics. The old ones fought the Soviets. The young ones are fighting for old time Islamic rules. Sounds strange that young men would fight for the cause that wraps chicks in non slimming burquas! On another note, the Taliban were well on thier way to stop the drug trade in Afghanistan when the US took the country. The US special forces won the day with air power and suitcases full of US greenbacks. Now the western media says that drug money is funding the Talibans.. the truth is that the Karzai goverment is making money hand over fist with the drug trade... And the US know it. With all the fire power and air power the Americans have, they could burn every Poppy field in the country in a matter of days. Why don't they? Because it is keeping Karzai in power, You see Afghanistan is a country of tribes and warlords. The Americans won the war in Afghanistan by air power and suitcases full of money. They picked a western friendly warlord and put him in power, but turned the other way as to why he was a warlord...
Karzai is playing the West for all it is worth. There will be a pipeline through Afghanistan to western ports eventually. And that is the price the westerners are paying now. What is a few billion dollars and around 5 thousand casualties care to the businessmen who think they run USA? Well it's acceptable losses, as you can bet that none of their sons will die in a far away land..

Well just finished watching the ladies free skate. Some great performances by many of the skaters. But Joannie winning a medal is great!! The story of the Olympics, I think.

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT CANCELS VANCOUVER VISIT!

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has cancelled his visit to Vancouver to attend the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics on Sunday evening. No official reason other than he is probably pissed off his hockey team got lacquered by Canada last night. Well he has four long years to get his team ready for the Sochi games in 2014. Sochi is somewhere in Russia by the way. Canadian athletes will prepare for these games by going on an all cabbage and vodka diet 4 months ahead of the games.
I wonder if Obama will come if his hockey team wins?

Olympics!

I noticed a few things tonight watching the games on tv:

1 - Canada can play hockey when they get their shit together;
2 - The commentator called the gold medal winning women's bob sled winners Steak and Potatoes as they are from Alberta and PEI; and
3 - I noticed the German # 1 women's bob sled team had west coast type native drawing on their helmets and they had maple leafs on their sled. Now that is the Olympic spirit!

Headline : British PM apologizes to 'home children'

Well here's an interesting story. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized Wednesday for a government program instituted in the 19th century that sent poor children from London's slums overseas to do hard labour in British colonies, including 100,000 to Canada. This went on from 1860s to 1939.
The churches and philanthropic organizations that sent the orphaned, abandoned and pauper children, usually between the ages of nine and 14, to Canada were "motivated by social and economic forces." In other words they were making money from it, somehow. The good old church up to its usually questionable practices. Apparently most kids were welcomed by poor farming communities as a source of cheap labour and domestic help.
Unbelievable that they would export kids to foreign lands instead of putting them to work themselves.
Australia has also apologized last November for its part, but Canada has no plans to.
